NMEA ConnectFest at METS 2014

NMEA ConnectFest at METS 2014 - Amsterdam NL

The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) demonstrated how the global network communications standard NMEA 2000 works at the Marine Equipment Trade Show, METS 2014, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

NMEA Technical Director Steve Spitzer said, ‘This is an important event for NMEA 2000 manufacturers and for the international attendees at METS.’

Spitzer introduced the session with an overview of NMEA 2000 then, along with various manufacturers, answered questions ranging from costs and installation to configurability, scalability and expansion of the system to meet future needs.

During the METS ConnectFest demonstration manufacturers connected their equipment to the NMEA 2000 backbone. A lightweight cable showed the simplicity of adding or removing devices and demonstrated their interoperability on the network.

NMEA - National Marine Electronics Association

Founded in 1957, the NMEA has led the way in establishing technical standards for data exchange in marine electronics. With the widely accepted NMEA 0183 data protocol, NMEA 2000 and certification standards for marine electronics technicians NMEA focuses on ensuring that the professional and leisure boater is provided with reliable products and professional service.

The mission of the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) is to be a worldwide, self-sustaining organization committed to enhancing the technology and safety of electronics used in marine applications. The International Marine Electronics Association (IMEA) represents NMEA's evolution from a national to an international marine electronics standards and education association.

NMEA 2000 - The Electronics Industry Standard

NMEA 2000 is the CAN-based open industry network standard that permits different brands of electrical and electronic equipment to communicate seamlessly with each other. Electronic devices can be added to or removed from an NMEA 2000 network without any downtime or any impact on the overall operation of the system...

Installing NMEA 2000 provides the end user with the ability to choose best-of-class products, rather than having to use all the same brand. NMEA 2000 allows disparate devices to communicate with each other as long as they are NMEA 2000 certified. NMEA 2000 was created by, and is maintained by, a group comprising more than 100 marine electronics companies.

Equipment built by manufacturers to the NMEA 2000 Standard can share data and commands on the boat’s network. The NMEA 2000 Standard includes message priority and collision avoidance. The NMEA 2000 Standard and its physical components have become increasing adopted by the maritime community, both in recreational boating and in the commercial marine sector.

NMEA Values

  • Facilitating and supporting the development and implementation of standards and uniform government regulations for the marine electronics industry applicable to recreational and regulated vessels

  • Facilitating, supporting and providing marine electronics training, including required and recommended recurrent certified training programs

  • Providing a responsive organizational structure that effectively deploys resources and voluntary leadership for maximum member benefit.

  • Listening to and responding to members with accurate information about the state of the industry, regulatory issues and business practices that may have a direct and material impact on operations.

  • To support the International Marine Electronics Association (IMEA) Educational Foundation.
