Irish Wave Record 20 Metres - Surfer Rides

The severe storms that lashed the British Isles last week produced the largest wave ever known off the Irish Coast. The 20 metre (67 foot) monster wave was measured by a wave buoy 60 miles out to sea during a Force 10 storm.

The Irish weather service Met Eireann said, 'At 1400 on Tuesday 13th December the M4 weather buoy off the Donegal coast recorded a maximum wave height of 20.4 metre (67 feet) which is the highest maximum wave recorded in Irish waters'. Meteorologists said that the data showed the conditions were the most severe they had ever encountered.

At Malin Head, the most northerly tip of Ireland, winds gusting to 87mph (140 km / hour) were recorded. The Irish coastguard urged people to stay off exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches and promenades during the extreme stormy weather.

An extreme surfer earns his place in the record books after riding a 25 metre (90 foot) wave. Garrett McNamara caught the monster wave during the ZON North Canyon Project in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal. The coastline is home to a deep water canyon which funnels large swells from the Atlantic Ocean, creating record-breaking waves.
