How Do We Re-Power Our Fast Craft Fleets

For Speed@Seawork 2022 John Haynes, Managing Director of Hybrid Marine Power, will present on the challenging topic "How do we Re-Power Fast Craft Fleets in a Changing World?"

The presentation gives an overview of the opportunities and challenges faced by professional maritime organisations as they consider their options beyond traditional use of petrol outboards and diesel inboards.

In a changing world everyone from superyacht owners to the military are looking closely at next generation energy. Many technologies are being put forward as potential solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support the transition to Net Zero by 2050.

Battery-electric has its place, but many vessels need to go further and faster to get their tasks done. Hybrid solutions can bridge the gap between internal combustion engines and electrification. Hydrogen is now in the mix, both as a fuel and as part of fuel cell systems.

Focussed research and development is needed to demonstrate what is feasible. All stakeholders, from end-users to industry, need to identify which technologies have real potential. Instead of waiting for zero, operators can then start making a difference now and in the very near future.

Speed@Seawork 2022

Speed@Seawork is run on Monday, the day before the main Seawork 2022 event commences. Speed@Seawork will be held in and around Cowes Yacht Haven on the Isle of Wight, UK on 20 June 2022.

Delegates will have access to sector-specific companies throughout the day and receive pertinent key note speeches and information from MoD personnel.

Commander Tom Trent, Royal Navy - Future Air Defence Programme Director & Above Water Battlespace AWW SO1, will join Phil Gittins, DE&S Ships - Boats Team Leader, to share their thoughts on future Seaboats. 

First introduced in 2018, Speed@Seawork is aimed squarely at facilitating growth and development for the design, build and operation of these specialist vessels. Sea trials will take place in the waters of The Solent off Cowes.
