Foiling Cats Set to Break 50 Knot Barrier

F50 - 50 Foot Foiling Catamarans

Launched at the end of 2018, SailGP is a revolutionary new global sports championship, combining cutting edge technology with athleticism.

Launched in 2018, the world’s fastest on-water sail racing with the most technologically advanced F50 hits UK waters for the first time in August. Racing head-to-head in identical 50 foot foiling catamarans, the supercharged F50s are capable of breaking sailing’s elusive 50-knot (60 mph) speed barrier.

The F50 is a new class of boat. It shares DNA with the revolutionary catamarans used for the previous America’s Cup but it is the next generation and 15% faster. These boats are the culmination of 10 years of development in high-performance, foiling, multi-hull racing. The skill required to sail these powerful foiling machines is phenomenal and as a result, this new championship has attracted some of the world’s most talented athletes.

The Great Britain SailGP Team alone has five Olympic and 17 World Championship medals under its belt. Team CEO, Chris Draper brings with him a wealth of invaluable experience following the 35th America’s Cup where he sailed with SoftBank Team Japan. He said, ‘Racing the F50 is like nothing else you can do in this sport. Constantly balanced on a knife edge, it requires fast decision making, while maintaining total focus on your role that keeps the boat sailing at ridiculous speeds.’
