The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the basis of all electronic navigation systems. GPS information is displayed on chart plotters which show constant navigation updates. GPS navigation can be integrated with radar and depth information on one display screen. Radar is an object detection system that can be used to identify ships, aircraft, weather formations and land masses. Depth sounders use sonar to view the underwater terrain below, to the side and ahead of the craft. Automatic Identification System (AIS) is used to electronically identify vessels.
